Valley of the Cross began with a piece of land and the intention to create a place that could support retreat work in a steady and lasting way.

Austin arrived here in 2023 with a clear direction, but it became apparent quite quickly that things move differently in this part of the world. What appears simple on paper often takes time in practice. Materials are not always easy to source, skilled help is not always readily available, and the climate has a strong influence on how and when work can happen.

Winter brings long periods of rain and damp that settle deeply into the land. Summer brings dry heat that requires a different pace and way of working. Many decisions have been shaped by these conditions, often requiring patience and a willingness to adapt plans along the way.

There has been a great deal to learn. Some things worked as expected, others did not. Working with people, organising projects, and finding ways to move forward brought challenges of their own. At times the process was slower and more demanding than anticipated.

Alongside the practical work, there were also personal changes unfolding. Periods of uncertainty, distance, and loss ran in parallel to the building of the space. Even so, the work continued, often in small steps, gradually bringing the project into form.

Somewhere along the way, Christina came into Austin’s life and, soon after, into the project itself. From that point, the direction was no longer held by one person alone. It became a shared commitment.

Together, we have continued developing the space through a process that has rarely been linear. There have been moments where things came together easily, and others where plans needed to change or be reconsidered entirely. Both have contributed to what now exists.

The work here is not separate from daily life. Learning to live with the land rather than impose upon it continues to influence how the place evolves. Some of this learning has come through practical necessity, some through observation, and some through making mistakes and trying again.

Today, the valley offers a small retreat setting with a gathering yurt for group work, Nature-immersed guest accommodation, and space for people to spend time in a quieter environment. We welcome retreats, workshops, and those who feel the need to step back from the pace of everyday life.

Alongside hosting, we are gradually building a more rooted way of living here. Growing food, caring for the land, and learning to work in a way that remains in balance with the conditions of the place.

What exists here continues to take shape through daily work, through the seasons, and through the people who come and spend time in the valley.
